Allergy Treatments Available to Allergy Sufferers

Treatments for allergy issues are quite prevalent these days.  Since allergies are so common, as 50 million Americans suffer from this medical condition, various treatments are offered to help keep one's allergies at bay as much as possible.  There are a few allergy treatments which are used more often than others are and these will be discussed below.

Allergy Medication
Depending on the type of allergies which you suffer from, you will have your choice of quite a few different allergy medications.  These medications are available in different forms such as pills, eye drops, creams, ointments and sprays.  The first variety of medication is antihistamines.  These allergy treatments help to prevent rashes, hives, itching, sneezing and even runny noses.  You can obtain these antihistamines over the counter or by prescription, depending on the type and strength of allergy medication which you need.  Decongestants may also help in the fight against allergies by preventing one from having a stuffy nose as the decongestant allergy medication will remedy the swollen nose membranes.  No matter what type of treatment you choose, always be sure to check with your medical health professional prior to starting a new treatment regimen.

In addition to antihistamines and decongestants, those suffering from allergies may also take other medications.  Some of these additional allergy treatments include eye drops to reduce redness, corticosteroid creams/ointments to relieve itching caused by rashes, cromolyn sodium to prevent nose inflammation and oral corticosteroids.  Epinephrine is also used in extreme emergencies when a serious allergic reaction, such as one caused by insect bites or food allergies to name two examples, may come on suddenly and be potentially life threatening.  The epinephrine comes in an injectable pen form and will help in the case of an anaphylactic attack.

Allergy Shots (Immunotherapy)
In addition to allergy medication to help keep allergies to a minimum, allergy shots or immunotherapy is a route often taken by allergy sufferers.  Allergy shots are often chosen by those who cannot avoid the specific allergens which affect them and/or when allergy medications simply do not do the trick.  The allergy shots are given to the individual on a periodic basis recommended by their doctor and will help the patient to become less sensitive to the allergens in question.  These are most effective with allergies related to hay fever, pet allergies and allergies pertaining to insect bites.

Prevention
In addition to allergy medications and immunotherapy, there is always the concept of prevention which falls within the allergy treatment arena.  If possible, preventing one's contact with the allergens which they are susceptible to will help to keep allergic reactions to a minimum and aid in the individual being less likely to experience sneezing, coughing, watery eyes and a runny nose.  Therefore, if you can possibly stay away from the allergens which bother you, the results will be much better in the end.
