Causes of Allergies
Allergies are cited as having many root causes. As various types of allergies exist, it is easily seen that there will be various allergens which cause this type of medical condition to arise. This condition is divided into different categories according to the variety of allergens which cause one to suffer coughing, sneezing, watering eyes and a runny nose, to name a few of the common symptoms. The following will detail some of the causes of allergies which afflict approximately 1 in 5 Americans.
Indoor and Outdoor Allergens
For the category known as indoor and outdoor allergies, there are quite a few substances which cause one to experience this type of condition. Some of the common indoor allergens include pet dander, mold spores and dust mites. With regard to the outdoor substances which can cause one to sneeze, sniffle and cough, some of those allergens include tree pollen, grass and different flower varieties. With the outdoor substances, these tend to be quite prevalent as they spread quickly due to the blowing air and will often cover a wide area.
Skin-Related Allergies
Skin allergies are caused by certain substances coming in contact with one's flesh. Usually, when one has a skin allergy it is based on a specific allergen. Some of the causes of this type of condition include coming into contact with different plants, dust mites, foods or latex products. The result of coming into contact with these items is usually a hive or eczema-type condition.
Food/Drug Allergies
Food and drugs can also cause an adverse reaction in some individuals. Many different foods and drugs can be the cause although there are some which are more widespread than others are. These may include peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, dairy products, soy, wheat and penicillin.
Reactions to Latex
Latex can also cause allergic reactions in those who are sensitive to this material type. For those individuals who must wear gloves on a frequent basis yet are sensitive to latex, there are other non-latex alternatives which will do the job just as well.
Insect Bite Reactions
Some individuals are also allergic to insect bites and stings. Bee stings and spider bites comprise a large amount of allergic reactions under this category. Although only 4% of individuals who suffer from allergies have insect bite reactions, the results of such a bite or sting can be quite serious in nature.
Eye Allergies
Those who have this type of medical condition suffer from eye conditions caused by allergies. Two of the more common eye conditions caused by allergies are conjunctivitis and ocular allergies. These are usually caused by indoor and outdoor allergens.
